Concrete stains add attractive color to durable concrete floors. Unlike acid stains, which chemically react with the concrete, acrylic stains dye the floor surface. Water-based acrylic stains do not produce the fumes that acid stains produce, and are acceptable under strict state environmental protection standards. Before you choose a stain or sealer, check the label to ensure it is acceptable under emission standards in your state. Make sure that your concrete sealer is compatible with the type of concrete stain you use.
Clean the Concrete Floor

Vacuum the concrete floor thoroughly. Pay special attention to the edges and corners.

Mix dish detergent with warm water in a bucket. Mop and scrub the floor, and vacuum the residue with a wet vac.

Rinse the floor using a pressure washer, let the floor dry, and vacuum up any remaining debris. Wet the floor and clean it again if the water beads up.

Spray the citric acid solution onto the clean floor and scrub it with a brush. This step opens the floor surface pores so that the cement can bond with the stain. Rinse the floor with a power washer 15 to 20 minutes later, after the bubbling stops. Let the floor dry for 24 hours.
Apply Acrylic Stain

Pour the acrylic stain into a paint tray. Brush the stain onto the floor edges and corners. Dip the roller into the stain and apply the stain to the floor, always rolling in the same direction. Let the first coat dry for at least three hours.

Apply a second coat of stain. After the second coat dries, mop the floor with dish detergent and water. Let the floor dry for 24 hours, and wash it again if you can feel any residue on the floor surface.

Pour the sealer into a paint tray and roll the sealer onto the clean, dry floor surface. Allow the sealer to dry at least 24 hours before you walk on the floor or bring furniture into the room.
